The latest investment by PhilStic, a family-owned company in New Zealand, is a new Gallus Labelfire 340. It is the first Labelfire in New Zealand, following the commissioning of two of these machine systems in Australia. PhilStic celebrated the installation and its 40th anniversary with a ceremony in August 2021.

The company was founded in 1981 by Phil Fewings. Today, it is managed by the second generation: Helen Fewings, now managing director, and Rebecca Piek, director. Following the installation of two Labelfire machines in Australia, the PhilStic machine is the first in New Zealand – a clear quality and productivity advantage for the company.

Dierk Wissmann, National Sales Manager at Heidelberg, explains that it is the versatility, productivity, and quality that impress both print shops and their customers time and time again. Wissmann elaborates: "In addition to CMYK + white, the machine system can be ordered with an extended color space of green, orange, and violet, as in the case of this Labelfire for PhilStic. This enables very accurate coverage of the Pantone Plus color range."

Performance and quality

With a promise to provide 24-hour turnaround service and a reputation for delivering a wide range of label products, PhilStic has set the bar high. Operations Manager Steve Holmes is pleased that the new Labelfire 340, installed in mid-June, is already delivering on its promise.

"This new Labelfire features the latest product upgrades and enhancements and has been configured to our specifications. The machine system comprises two flexographic printing units and a cold foil unit upstream of the central digital inkjet printing unit. Downstream are three additional flexographic printing units, a laminating unit for foiling or laminating, and a coating unit with extended web guide for drying," explains Holmes. The company selected the machine after evaluating a number of options.

Complete flexibility

"One of the main advantages of the Gallus Labelfire is that it is a fully equipped hybrid machine, so the entire label processing process can be handled in a single pass with short setup times, very fast production speeds, and easy operation," says Holmes, adding: "It is simply by far the best solution for producing the quality and variety of products we need in a productive and profitable manner – and our machine operators are more than enthusiastic!"

Production Manager Bart Mann agrees, explaining: "We produce a huge range of products with a particular focus on booklet and multi-web labels for the chemical industry – just one of the sectors that requires extreme accuracy and precise processing."

"The Gallus Labelfire applies the ink directly to the substrate without the need for mixing or additional calibration, and the Heidelberg ink set is fantastic in terms of lightfastness and durability. This is immensely important, especially for some labels used on items such as chemical drums, which are often stored outdoors," explains Mann. "Color consistency is also a big bonus for high-quality, brand-conscious customers and regular repeat orders."

UV inkjet printing

"The Gallus Labelfire offers accurate color matching and repeatability, regardless of whether it's different labels in a range, different product labels for the same brand, or repeats of past runs. We have eight or more versions of a label in a job, so it's important to be able to achieve this consistency easily across the entire range," says Holmes. According to him, turnaround times have been significantly reduced and the company has been able to increase capacity without adding staff. Holmes adds that the Labelfire has also exponentially increased the number of options PhilStic can offer its customers.

"Gallus and Heidelberg place service and support at the forefront, with factory-trained technicians not only here in Auckland, but also with experts in Sydney and Melbourne," says Mann, explaining, "This long-standing relationship, not only with Gallus, but also with Heidelberg in this region, gives us the confidence you need to have in your business partners."
