Gallus CO2-neutral DE

St. Gallen, July 13, 2022 – Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG today announced its groundbreaking commitment to make its products CO2-neutral by the end of 2022. Once certified, the company will be one of the first manufacturers of narrow web printing presses to achieve this important milestone. In addition to its increased commitment to economic, social, and environmental responsibility and its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions across the company, Gallus has entered into a partnership with Forliance, a specialist provider of climate solutions. This partnership will help offset the remaining CO2 emissions from its production process and achieve its goal within an ambitious timeframe.

Gallus' comprehensive sustainability program is already certified according to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems. This standard ensures that companies comply with their legal obligations, use environmentally friendly processes, and take responsibility for environmental management. Michael Sahm, Director of Climate Change Strategy at Forliance, explains: "Climate change is increasingly becoming a stress test for printing press manufacturers and their business models – for some, it is even their biggest challenge. However, well-thought-out climate measures in operations can turn climate change-related risks and concerns into opportunities. At Gallus, we are confident that by complying with the Kyoto Protocol, we have chosen the gold standard for the right strategy to achieve its goals. For the company and its customers, this strategy will pave the way for meaningful ecological change and lay the foundation for future efforts."

With production facilities in Switzerland and Germany, Gallus is a leading manufacturer of conventional and digital narrow web web-fed printing presses for label and packaging printing. The company employs around 300 people worldwide and has installed more than 3,800 printing presses at over 1,250 customers. Due to the dynamic business environment and its versatile machine portfolio, the first project goal is to analyze the manufacturing process for these printing presses and calculate the associated CO2 emissions. Every step in the production process—from conceptual development and material selection to energy consumption and packaging—will be analyzed in detail. The remaining CO2 emissions will then be offset in accordance with the Gold Standard-based compensation program. At the same time, a team will drive forward the decarbonization of the company by increasing energy efficiency and using renewable energies to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Dario Urbinati, Chief Sales & Service Officer of the Gallus Group: "As a company, we are well aware that it is high time to commit to sustainability as our top corporate goal. We must meticulously address our environmental impact with the same expertise, commitment, and speed with which we develop our printing solutions. We must also ensure that we convey the same confidence in our sustainability credentials to our customers and other market participants as we do in other aspects of our performance.

"Over the past 10 months, we have aligned our work with the Heidelberg Group's environmental program. We have integrated it into our business operations at a practical level so that we can make conscious and informed decisions about resourcing, managing our facilities, and how we develop and manufacture our printing presses. However, we need to do more. Although we are only at the beginning of this journey, we want to ensure that our products are CO2-compensated in the future – an important first step in demonstrating our ambitions," Urbinati continued.

Next year, Gallus will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In addition to its sustainability program, Gallus has other transformation projects underway, not only to create a new vision for its future, but also to lay the foundation for the next 100 years of successful business and bring about positive change across the industry.

In conclusion, Dr. Frank Schaum, CEO of the Gallus Group, explains: "As we enter this new phase of our company's development, we want to do everything in our power to create a more positive, sustainable future for the printing and packaging market. The upcoming 100th anniversary of the company was the perfect opportunity to reevaluate our processes and realign our priorities so that we can now make conscious and meaningful progress toward turning this vision into reality."
