HEIDELBERG and Gallus announce new matting process for digital inkjet printing

10.09.2024

  • Fast, cost-efficient, and high-quality inline matting process opens up a new profitable market segment for digital inkjet printing
  • New MatteJet technology drives digital printing adoption across the industry, enabling print and finishing companies to leverage inkjet technology for smart, connected printing

St. Gallen, September 10, 2024 – The Gallus Group, a subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG), is set to revolutionize narrow web printing with its latest research breakthrough: Gallus MatteJet technology. The innovation, which will be unveiled at Labelexpo Americas 2024, represents a significant advance in inkjet printing. It enables a high-quality matt finish that was previously impossible in digital inkjet printing, opening up the wine label market to inkjet technology for the first time.

MatteJet was developed at the Gallus Innovation Center in St. Gallen, the Gallus Experience Center, as an example of HEIDELBERG's focus as a total solution provider for all modern printing processes – covering the entire spectrum from toner to inkjet, from offset to flexo, controlled by a common Prinect workflow. At Labelexpo Americas 2024, Gallus will join HEIDELBERG in demonstrating how this groundbreaking innovation addresses one of the key challenges that has limited the growth of digital inkjet technology in the past. Visitors to the trade show will also learn how MatteJet will transform the wine and spirits label market segment and offer printers and converters the key to a profitable new business area.

The glossy surface characteristic of digital inkjet technology is one of the biggest obstacles to the widespread use of this technology in labels and packaging—especially in premium segments such as wine and spirits labels, where brands traditionally expect a high-quality matte finish. Until now, this has only been possible using conventional printing processes or additional finishing with matt varnishes, which increases time, complexity, and costs.

Gallus MatteJet technology is a milestone in the industry, offering a fast, cost-effective and high-quality matting option that is integrated directly into the digital inkjet process. For the first time, printers can achieve a high-quality matt finish at the touch of a button without changing colors or adding varnish for overprinting. By removing one of the main barriers to the widespread adoption of inkjet printing, Gallus' new, innovative process offers print companies a tremendous opportunity to enter a highly profitable market segment. In addition, MatteJet enables more label printers and brand owners than ever before to benefit from the advantages of digital printing. These include more profitable short runs, personalization, and on-demand printing—an important step in the digital transformation of the industry.

"The development of Gallus MatteJet technology marks a decisive moment in the evolution of inkjet printing, opening up a world of new possibilities and ultimately transforming the very foundations of what is possible with inkjet technology," comments Dario Urbinati, CEO of the Gallus Group. "By making matting accessible to digital inkjet printing, we can open up a whole new market segment to printers and converters without them having to make significant investments in separate offset solutions. This increases profitability and is an example of our commitment to creating a new era of flexibility that will enable our industry to flourish in the long term."

The new finishing process uses state-of-the-art technologies that have not yet been used in the label and packaging industry. It was developed as part of the company's ongoing research and development work at the Gallus Experience Center, which was established last year to drive innovation through collaboration for the long-term success of the entire industry. "The new MatteJet technology is revolutionary not only in terms of the possibilities it opens up, but also in terms of its development," Urbinati continues. "We opened the Gallus Experience Center with the vision of creating a dynamic, collaborative center of excellence that would drive significant, meaningful change in the industry. Gallus MatteJet is an example and proof of the kind of transformative developments that can be achieved when this vision is combined with real insights into today's market needs and, of course, with the essential resources and expertise of our parent company HEIDELBERG. MatteJet embodies our long-term mission and brings the intelligent, connected printing future within reach."

The new MatteJet technology was developed for integration with the Gallus digital printing unit and is a further extension of Gallus' "System to Compose" concept, which offers maximum compatibility between the leading product lines. The "System to Compose" concept enables printers and converters to equip, customize, and remove additional units from their Gallus One to meet changing business requirements. Following the overwhelming response at drupa 2024, the concept has been further expanded to include workflow, service, and equipment options. At Labelexpo, Gallus will demonstrate how the System to Compose concept enables printers to change, adapt, and benefit in the long term, with MatteJet now another piece of the puzzle.

The latest version of the Gallus One is making its global trade fair debut at this year's Labelexpo. With a newly available printing width of 430 mm, the label printing press now offers even more application possibilities than ever before. Visitors will be able to see for themselves the opportunities offered by the recently expanded color space and the integration of Saphira inks in orange and violet to stand out from the competition on the shelf.

Alongside Gallus, HEIDELBERG will also be presenting various aspects of its range of solutions for labels. HEIDELBERG has recently expanded into new business areas and consolidated its leading position as a provider of complete solutions. Together, they will present a range of innovations in the label sector, including the latest developments in their Screeny® screen printing solutions and Prinect workflow software. Prinect, the link in Gallus' System to Compose, is a key factor in the digitization of production and the realization of the intelligent, networked print shop of the future—which can be experienced live at the Labelexpo booth (3523).

As a subsidiary, Gallus remains an important component in the company's growth strategy for the packaging and label market and will continue to play a central role for HEIDELBERG in the future.
